X character counter
Counts the way X counts, and shows you the exact text that gets cropped. Nothing you type or attach leaves your browser.
Counted with X's weighted rules: every URL costs 23 characters whatever its length, and most emoji and CJK characters cost 2.
Nothing you type or attach leaves this tab - no upload, no account, no server.
What actually costs characters on X
X does not count characters, it weights them. Every URL costs 23 no matter how long it is, because t.co rewrites it on the way in - a 140-character tracking link and a seven-character domain are the same 23. Most emoji cost 2, and so do CJK characters, so a post that looks like 240 characters can measure 280. Premium accounts may post up to 25,000 characters; we enforce the 280 floor for everyone, because that is the post everyone else's timeline shows.
Three posts X cuts
- Two links in one postA short domain and a long UTM-tagged article URL.46 weighted characters gone before a word is written. Shortening the long one saves nothing: both were already 23.
- An emoji-run headlineA 250-character post with a dozen emoji spaced through it.274 weighted. Each emoji counts 2, so the dozen quietly added 12 characters that no character count in a text editor will show you.
- The reply that grewA 279-character thought, then an @handle added at the front.Over. A leading mention is weighted like any other text here, so the fix is cutting words, not the handle.
Only on X
- URLs always weigh 23 characters, shortened or not.
- Four images or one video in a post, never both.
- A URL in the text raises our per-post API cost to $0.20, against $0.015 without one - X prices the link, so we show it.
Questions
- Is this X character counter free?
- Yes. There is no login and no upload: it runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type or attach leaves your device.
- How long can an X post be?
- 280 characters. Counted with X's weighted rules: every URL costs 23 characters whatever its length, and most emoji and CJK characters cost 2. Premium accounts may post up to 25,000 chars; we enforce the 280 floor for everyone.
- Why does my post count differently here than in a word counter?
- Because X weights characters instead of counting them. A URL is 23 whatever its length, most emoji are 2, and so are CJK characters. This counter runs the same twitter-text rules X runs, which is why a post your editor calls 250 characters can measure 280 here.
- What happens if an X post goes over the limit?
- X crops or refuses it. The counter marks the exact tail that would be lost, so you can cut the right words instead of guessing.
