Bluesky character counter
Counts the way Bluesky counts, and shows you the exact text that gets cropped. Nothing you type or attach leaves your browser.
Counted in grapheme clusters: a flag or a skin-tone emoji is one character however many code points it is built from.
Nothing you type or attach leaves this tab - no upload, no account, no server.
What actually costs characters on Bluesky
300 grapheme clusters, not characters. A grapheme is what you would point at on screen: a flag, or an emoji with a skin tone, is one, however many code points it is assembled from. Underneath that the lexicon also caps a post at 3,000 bytes, so a post heavy with emoji or non-Latin script can fail on bytes while the grapheme count still reads under 300. Links are counted in full - there is no shortener.
Three posts Bluesky cuts
- An emoji flagA post ending in a country flag emoji. One grapheme, four code points, eight bytes. The grapheme count is the one that decides whether it publishes.
- A post in a non-Latin script280 graphemes of Hebrew or Japanese.Comfortably under 300 and possibly over 3,000 bytes. The byte cap is the limit that fails first on multi-byte text.
- A URL and a thoughtA 240-character sentence plus an article link.Over. The link is counted in full here, unlike X, so a long URL has to be traded against the sentence.
Only on Bluesky
- Counted in grapheme clusters, so one flag emoji is one character.
- A second cap of 3,000 bytes sits under the 300 graphemes - heavy emoji or non-Latin text hits it first.
- Four images or one video per post, never both.
Questions
- Is this Bluesky character counter free?
- Yes. There is no login and no upload: it runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type or attach leaves your device.
- How long can a Bluesky post be?
- 300 characters. Counted in grapheme clusters: a flag or a skin-tone emoji is one character however many code points it is built from.
- Why does my Bluesky post fail at under 300 characters?
- Two limits sit on top of each other: 300 grapheme clusters and 3,000 bytes. Emoji and non-Latin scripts cost several bytes per grapheme, so a post that reads as 280 characters can be over on bytes. The grapheme count is the one shown here; the byte cap is the one that surprises people.
- What happens if a Bluesky post goes over the limit?
- Bluesky crops or refuses it. The counter marks the exact tail that would be lost, so you can cut the right words instead of guessing.
