Reddit character counter
Counts the way Reddit counts, and shows you the exact text that gets cropped. Nothing you type or attach leaves your browser.
Counted in Unicode code points: one plain character is one, and a link costs its full length.
After two years of running a 12 person agency I am going back to freelancing, and here is the full accounting of why, with numbers
Nothing you type or attach leaves this tab - no upload, no account, no server.
What actually costs characters on Reddit
A Reddit post is two fields. The title is required and capped at 300 characters, and the body takes up to 40,000 - the title is the one that is short, which is the reverse of every other platform in this toolbox. Our publisher reads the first line as the title unless one is set explicitly, so a post that opens with a paragraph gets a 300-character title made of its first sentence.
Three posts Reddit cuts
- A first line written as an opening sentenceA post whose first line is a 380-character paragraph. The title is 80 characters over. Setting the title explicitly is the fix; otherwise the first line is the title, whatever it was written to be.
- A cross-post to five subredditsOne good post, five relevant communities. One post, one subreddit. There is no fan-out here, and five separate submissions is how a spam filter reads five submissions.
- A write-up with a screenshot2,000 characters of body plus an image. Not one post. A Reddit post is a self post, a link, an image or a video - never text and media together - so the screenshot goes in a comment.
Only on Reddit
- The title is capped at 300 characters and is required; the body takes 40,000.
- One post to one subreddit - no cross-posting or multi-subreddit fan-out.
- A post is text, a link, one image or one video, never text and media together.
- Reddit publishing is built here; its app approval is still pending with Reddit.
Questions
- Is this Reddit character counter free?
- Yes. There is no login and no upload: it runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type or attach leaves your device.
- How long can a Reddit post be?
- 40,000 characters. Counted in Unicode code points: one plain character is one, and a link costs its full length.
- What is the character limit on a Reddit title?
- 300 characters, and the title is required. The body takes 40,000, so on Reddit the short field is the one everybody reads. If no title is set, our publisher reads the first line of the post as the title.
- What happens if a Reddit post goes over the limit?
- Reddit crops or refuses it. The counter marks the exact tail that would be lost, so you can cut the right words instead of guessing.

We built these because our own agents count against exactly these limits before they publish. Let them write the post too.
