What actually costs characters on Discord

A Discord message takes 2,000 characters when it is posted by a webhook, whatever a member with a subscription can type by hand. Markdown counts in full - the asterisks around a bold word and the pound sign of a heading are characters too - so a formatted announcement runs out sooner than it looks. Attachments ride beside the text: up to 10 files, 25 MiB for the whole message together.
