Counted in Unicode code points: one plain character is one, and a link costs its full length.

What Reddit hides, and where

The listing shows the title and nothing else. A self post's body is behind the click, a link post's body does not exist, and the vote that decides whether the post is ever seen is cast on the title alone. That makes Reddit the one place in this toolbox where previewing the post means previewing one line.

Three posts Reddit only half shows

  1. A title that assumes the body"An update on last week's problem"Nobody in the listing saw last week. The title has to carry the whole claim, because the body is one click further than most readers go.
  2. A body that repeats the titleA title, then the same sentence opening the body. The first thing a reader who did click sees is something they already read. The body should start where the title stopped.
  3. A link post with contextA URL submission with a paragraph of explanation. The paragraph has nowhere to go - a link post has no body. It becomes the first comment, which is where a subreddit expects it anyway.

Only on Reddit

  • The title is capped at 300 characters and is required; the body takes 40,000.
  • One post to one subreddit - no cross-posting or multi-subreddit fan-out.
  • A post is text, a link, one image or one video, never text and media together.
  • Reddit publishing is built here; its app approval is still pending with Reddit.

Questions

Is this Reddit post preview free?
Yes. There is no login and no upload: it runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you type or attach leaves your device.
What is the character limit on a Reddit title?
300 characters, and the title is required. The body takes 40,000, so on Reddit the short field is the one everybody reads. If no title is set, our publisher reads the first line of the post as the title.
Does the preview match what Reddit actually shows?
It is the same chrome our studio uses before a post publishes: Reddit's current header layout, action row and media grid, in either of Reddit's themes. Engagement numbers are decorative, as in every scheduler's preview.
Does Reddit cut the post off in the feed?
Reddit shows the whole post in the feed - nothing folds, so the 40,000-character limit is the only cut.
How long can a Reddit post be?
40,000 characters. Counted in Unicode code points: one plain character is one, and a link costs its full length.
