What actually costs characters on Telegram

A Telegram channel post has two ceilings, and which one applies depends on whether anything is attached. Text alone takes 4,096 characters; the moment a photo, video or file rides along, the text stops being a message and becomes that media's caption, capped at 1,024. So the same post can be well inside the limit as an announcement and three times over it as a caption, and the fix is either a shorter caption or the media sent on its own.
