Hootsuite
Shapeless vs Hootsuite
The enterprise incumbent. Priced per seat, sold to marketing teams, with the deepest listening in the category behind a sales call. Below is every row we could read from their own pricing page, the places they beat us, and the one question that actually decides it.
You are a marketing team with seats, approval chains, an inbox of comments to triage, and a compliance review to survive. That is the product Hootsuite is built for, and we are not it.
You are one founder or a small team, and $99 per seat before anything has been written is the wrong shape of bill.
Side by side
Our column comes from the same pricing table our pricing page renders, so it cannot drift. Their column was read from hootsuite.com/plans on 2026-09-06. A fact their page does not publish says so instead of guessing.
| What | Shapeless | Hootsuite |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price | $35/month for the whole product, one workspace, no per-channel or per-seat multiplier. | $99/month per user (Standard, on annual billing). |
| Top self-serve plan | $200/month. Same product as the $35 plan - the tier only changes how much you make. | $399/month per user (Advanced) self-serve. Enterprise is a sales conversation. |
| Free tier or trial | $5 of real credit on sign-in, no card. It renders actual posts rather than showing you a tour. | No free plan. A 14-day trial, no card, with daily posting caps during the trial. |
| Publishes to | LinkedIn, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, Threads, Reddit, Bluesky and Mastodon, plus LinkedIn Pages. | Not published on the plans page: 10 accounts on Standard, unlimited above it, without naming the networks. |
| Writes the post | Yes, grounded in the research below rather than in a blank prompt. | Yes. Wisdom AI drafts posts and images on every plan. |
| Designs the image or carousel | Yes. Images and PDF carousels designed per brand - palette, layout, type. No templates. | Image generation is included in Wisdom AI. Multi-slide carousel design is not a published feature. |
| Makes the video | Yes. Narrated short video with script, voice, footage, captions and score, built for the post it belongs to. | No video generation is published on the plans page. |
| Researches what wins first | Yes. This is the part we exist for: agents read what is winning in your market this week, then write from it. | No. Listening tells you what is being said; it does not write the week from it, and it is Enterprise-only. |
| Scheduling | Yes. Approve each post, or let the agents plan, draft and publish the week. | Yes. Unlimited scheduled posts from Standard up, with a team calendar and approval flows. |
| Analytics | Per-post metrics on what we published, swept back automatically. No social listening - we do not pretend to have it. | The deepest here, and the most gated: basic on Standard, custom reports on Professional, advanced analytics and listening reserved for Enterprise. |
| Your own agents can drive it | Yes to all three: a REST API, a published CLI, and a hosted MCP server - on every plan, not as an upgrade. | The plans page names 'MCP connectors' under Wisdom AI without detail, and does not document a public REST API or CLI. |
| Company | Early stage, founder-run. We do not publish revenue or headcount, and you should not credit a number nobody has published. | Not published on the plans page. |

Where Hootsuite wins
A comparison page that finds nothing good to say about the other product is an advertisement. These are the reasons to buy theirs.
- Social inbox and comment triage across accounts, which we do not do at all.
- Social listening and brand monitoring - genuinely the deepest in this category, though Enterprise-only.
- Team structure: seats, roles, approval workflows, and the audit trail an enterprise buyer needs.
- Twenty years of enterprise trust, procurement paperwork and security reviews already answered.
Where we win
- Price shape. $35 for a workspace against $99 per seat per month, before a single post exists.
- We write, design and film the content. Hootsuite manages content you bring.
- Our agents run the week and hand you posts to approve. Hootsuite's approval flows assume a human wrote it first.
- A documented REST API, a CLI and a hosted MCP server on every plan. Hootsuite's plans page mentions MCP connectors and documents neither an API nor a CLI.
Questions
- Why is Hootsuite so much more expensive?
- Because it is priced per seat for teams and sold with an enterprise motion: $99 per user per month on Standard rising to $399 on Advanced, with listening and advanced analytics reserved for Enterprise. It is not overpriced for what it is - it is priced for a marketing department. A founder posting for their own company is paying for an org chart they do not have.
- Does Hootsuite have a free plan?
- Not as of 2026-09-06. There is a 14-day trial with no card required and daily posting caps during the trial. Buffer is the one with a real free tier here.
- Which platforms does Hootsuite publish to?
- Its plans page does not list them. It quotes account counts - 10 on Standard, unlimited above - without naming the networks, so we cannot put a list in the table above without inventing it. Check their platform page against the accounts you actually need before you buy.
- Can Shapeless replace Hootsuite for a marketing team?
- Not entirely, and we would rather say so. If you need a shared social inbox, listening, per-seat permissions and an approval audit trail, keep Hootsuite. If the team's real problem is that producing enough good content is slow and expensive, we solve that and Hootsuite does not.
