Instagram image and video sizes

Instagram's own help page moved: the tallest feed post it documents today is 3:4, not the 4:5 every other guide still prints.

Every frame below is drawn to scale against the others in its section, and every number carries the Instagram page we read it on. Click a size to copy it.

Feed posts

Instagram publishes a window, not a size. Anything between 1.91:1 and 3:4 keeps its own resolution up to a width of 1080 px; anything outside gets cropped to fit.

Reels and stories

Both fill a 9:16 phone screen. Instagram documents the ratio and a floor, not a target, so 1080 x 1920 is 9:16 taken to Instagram's own 1080 px ceiling.

  • Bottom 40%: caption, handle and buttons

Meta names one measurable band: leave the bottom 40% free of text, logos and key elements. The top and side edges carry chrome too, but Meta publishes no pixel figure for them, so nothing is drawn there.

Reel1080x1920
Instagram documents an aspect window up to 9:16 and a 720 px floor rather than a pixel size. 1080 x 1920 is that ratio at the width Instagram stops scaling down.

Questions

What size is an Instagram post in 2026?
1080 px wide. The height depends on the shape you want: 1440 px for the tallest frame Instagram documents (3:4), 1350 px for the familiar 4:5, 1080 px square, or 566 px for the widest (1.91:1). Instagram keeps a photo at its own resolution as long as it is between 320 and 1080 px wide and inside that ratio window.
Is Instagram still 1080 x 1350?
Yes, and it is still a good default - but it is no longer the tallest option. Instagram's help page now documents the window as 1.91:1 to 3:4, which at 1080 px wide reaches 1440 px tall.
What are Instagram story dimensions?
1080 x 1920 px, a 9:16 ratio. Meta's own recommendation is 1080 x 1920 with a 600 x 1067 minimum. A story will also carry any feed ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5; it just leaves space above and below.
How long can an Instagram reel be?
Up to 20 minutes of recorded clips. Instagram adds one warning in the same paragraph: reels over 3 minutes will not be recommended to new audiences, so 3 minutes is the practical ceiling if reach matters.
What size is an Instagram reel cover?
420 x 654 px, roughly 1:1.55, and Instagram will not let you change it after the reel is posted.

Pixels are the half of the rules the platforms publish and our engine does not enforce. The other half - file formats, size caps, how many images fit in one post, what our API path will accept - is generated from the engine's own table at Instagram specs. Neither page restates what the other one owns.
